New Horizons is a class that is comprised primarily of married couples in their late 20’s and 30’s. Most of us have children which range in ages from ‘on the way’ to 5. Some families have multiple children and some are just getting started with this ‘experience.’ We actually have three families with multiples including one set of triplets!
We are an instructor led, discussion type class. We have a very informal setting and spend much of our time socializing before the lesson each week (we officially start class at 10:00). The studies that we have done in the past have ranged from relationships, to current event Church applications, to books of the Bible and other Biblical focuses. We typically rotate teaching and snack responsibilities and only those interested in participating as an instructor are asked to do so. All we ask of new couples is to come and get to know us (no teaching J).
Outside of Sunday mornings the class has bimonthly parties (cookouts, Christmas parties, etc.) as well as monthly guys nights and girls nights. The guys typically get together to watch football or play cards while the girls pretty much just make up an excuse to take a night off to socialize and leave the kids at home with their husbands.
From a service standpoint our class is involved with the Habitat building projects, Christmas charities, children’s ministries/education and, of course, the takeout line for the BBQ. Members of our class are also active on many committees in the church including the Board of Trustees, Nominations, Education, and Consignment sale committees.
About 1/3 of the class has been together since we started in 2001 and the rest have been joining gradually since then. Attendance averages around 15-20 and we have a little less than 40 members. Many of our members are new to the class and we try to be welcoming to our visitors. We hope that you’ll stop by on Sunday to get to know us if you are interested.
